On the western parts of the Hohenheim campus, construction is currently underway for the first part of the new Phytotechnikum research greenhouse - a high-tech research greenhouse to be completed in 2018. It is designed to eventually bring all of the University's greenhouses together in one place. The first construction period of the Phytotechnikum consists of 1,360 square meters; the goal is to eventually have 5,800 square meters of greenhouse space.

All elements in the greenhouse are modular components. This allows for quickly connecting small and larger units, depending on the research setup, making research more flexible. Inside, the Phytotechnikum boasts state-of-the-art technology: computer-controlled climate regulation and automated irrigation, a mobile CO2 fertilization machine, equipment to finetune light, moisture and temperature, as well as variable lighting technology.

In the end, the new Phytotechnikum is to use about two-thirds less energy per square meter. It has its own district heating system and a rainwater cistern, which is also used to cool the autoclaves.
